The Congress of Bukharian Jews of USA and Canada hosted a legislative breakfast this month in an effort to strengthen ties between Jewish and Muslim communities.

Jamaica Muslim Center, Inc. and the Foundation for Ethnic Understanding acted as partners to the Congress in sponsoring the event, inviting elected officials and NYPD representatives in order to discuss ongoing issues faced by both communities.

Bigotry, anti Semitism and Islamophobia were addressed, after which a representative of each community made a presentation of common needs and priorities, such as a strengthened police presence, small business growth and the lack of halal and kosher foods in public schools.

Assemblyman Rory Lancman said his 25th Assembly District was „the most diverse district in the most diverse borough“ of the city. Highlighting the importance of a strong relationship and mutual respect between Jews and Muslims, Lancman said finding a common ground on issues was critical.

„Queens is very rich in different cultures,“ he said. „We all have a common goal of bringing peace.“
